Sunbeam Kids Children at Risk Program is actively involved In the remote NorthWest border towns of Cambodia near the Thailand border. The plight of school age children at the border is a sad situation. Here children are not able to attend school due to several reasons listed below:
o Governent school is too far away.
o Roads are difficult, especially during the six months monsoon season
o Many border children have been abandoned and have to work all day.
o The "Private" lessons that all students have to pay for at the government
schools makes school unaffordable for many of the children.
o Many children can attend only a few days a week because they have to
help their families scratch out a living, falling behind they drop out.
Sunbeam Kids Children at Risk Program is making a difference by offering the children of the community a Private School having a Non-Formal Education Program. Our teachers are licensed by the Cambodian Government. Our Private School is free to the children.
The children are provided with one school uniform (they really need two) and class materials. This school is within walking distance for most of the children. There are 250 children attending that otherwise would not be able to go to school. They are learning the 3 R's.
The children start and end each class day with prayers. They also learn the Bible. Many children have become believers and were baptized. The children are taught about trafficking prevention and to report anything suspicious to he teacher. They are paired up with a buddy system. We offer an English class to the students to give them an added advantage.
Our area Missionary, Sophal, is coordinating this effort. When he ministers out in the villages he continually meets with parents or caregivers of these children to encourage them to allow the children to come so that at least they can learn to read, write and have a basic knowledge of arithmatic. A high percentage of the parents cannot read or write themselves.
It is our desire to be able to provide Non-Formal education to several of the other border towns who have the same delima. We have people in place to serve, we need your prayers and financial support to make it possible.
