Cambodia Ministry
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Part of Sunbeam Kids International's children's ministry has been focusing along the northwest border towns of Cambodia near the Thailand border. The conditions there are heartbreaking. Parents come to the border and bring their children. They cross the border into Thailand to find work, leaving the children on the Cambodian side to wait for them. Here the children wait and wait, for months. Many times their parents never return.
These children are thrown into dire poverty distress. No family, no place to live, nothing to eat. They are so vulnerable. Often in return for a place to stay and some food, they are told to work all day to bring home money to feed them and the family they stay with. Many of them have no opportunity to go to school. Untold are used for sexual abuse and are trafficked.
There are also many children living with grandmas, aunts and uncles because parents have abandoned them, or died. The amounts are staggering. It breaks the heart of God.
TOGETHER WE CAN HELP!
Figures show that 80% of children trafficked are done so by either their parents, relatives, or their caregivers. Often unscrupulous people will come into a village with job offers for the children that look safe and promising. Because of desperate times to provide for their families, parents, relatives and caregivers become vulnerable to these ploys. They believe them and sign over their children without knowing the full ramifications.
We have 52 National Pastors/Missionaries and 60+ interns working along the border towns. They are reaching in the border areas more than 9,000 children in the Sunbeam Kids Bible Clubs weekly. They also reach 9,300 adults in house churches weekly. They are teaching them about God's love. Our faithful staff are working in the heart of where things are going on. They live and work the rough areas where others will not go.
Everyday our staff ministers in these border towns. They have developed relationships with the village leaders and have established a network to report sexual abuse and trafficking to proper authorities and it is working! Our staff and interns themselves report to proper authorities child sexual and physical abuses. At times they have to rescue the children.
We strongly feel that as children and adults learn that they are special to God and He has a plan for their lives, that change happens. Along with their new-found faith and open hearts they are taught Christian morals and family responsibilities. They are teaching families about child traffickers and where to report violators.
Working Together to Prevent and End Sexual Abuse and Trafficking of Children
Stop Child Trafficking Before it Starts
Continually staying on top of the new ploys of traffickers who come into a village to "offer" jobs to the children. Teach parents and caregivers the truth about trafficking.
